Magellan Roadmate 1700 Freezes On Startup

Magellan Maestro 4210 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

I got a 4210 2 weeks ago. Used to have a Roadmate 760 before. 4210 is very quick to run on and get satellite reception. Extremely easy user interface – my 10 year old daughter got it without any instructions. Display is wide, bright and excellent in day light as well as at night. Very compact and easy to carry in a pocket. Will work in pedestrian mode as well – really neat and a nice feature over my previous bulky unit. It has AAA assistance but not detailed information on AAA sites. Does not announce street names like Roadmate 760 did (but I don’t care for that feature – it is annoying). Lacks bluetooth connectivity. I have not found any accuracy problems. Bottomline – a pretty good unit.

Product Description

We’ve been big fans of Magellan’s Maestro line since it came out in early 2006. The Maestro interface is incredibly easy to use, even for those who are not completely comfortable with electronics. At the same time, Magellan was ahead of the industry with useful innovations like multi-destination routing and pre-loaded reviews for points of interest like hotels and restaurants (from AAA). With it’s 3200 and 4200 series, Magellan has improved the Maestro line giving them a SirfStar III chipset that provides super-fast. satellite lock and making them thinner. Magellan RoadMate 2035 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Traffic Review

Length:: 4:59 Mins

Here’s my video review, if you have any questions or something I didn’t cover, please feel free to leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer!

UPDATE Nov.’10: On a recent trip to visit my parents, it alerted me to a car accident on the highway. It gave me a few options to detour and told me how long each one would take in comparison. Telling me there’s an accident is helpful, but I absolutely ADORE the specifics with the timing.

Big Pros!:
- I often use a traffic app on my iphone. So I’m sitting there with all these devices, all with different info. Now, with this GPS, it’s got it all. Live traffic updates and I won’t have to pay attention to multiple screens. In order to get the lifetime traffic updates for free, there are little banner ads now and then. They don’t block the map or directions, so they don’t bother me at all.
- The screen is large and bright, and the voice is nice and loud. Sometimes I have issues hearing my garmin, with this I was only 1/2 way in the sound level and it was clear as a bell.
- My garmin has a flip up antenna that I’m always convinced I’ll eventually snap off. The Magellan is internal, so that makes me a lot more comfortable.
- I LOVE the fact that it adjust so fast to wrong turns, but it doesn’t shout “recalculating” at me, which really usually just makes you feel dumb that even with a GPS you’re still going the wrong way. It just quickly decides the next best way to continue on my route. Sometimes my Garmin will send me on the most ridiculous back tracking journeys, the Magellan so far hasn’t done that to me.

I love this Magellan RoadMate 2035 GPS top to bottom. In comparing it with my Garmin Nuvi 360, there are a couple features I did notice though that this doesn’t have, which can be a con depending on what features are important to you.
- security code: I lock my garmin only because people seem to steal GPS devices from cars quite often in my town. If someone were to steal my nuvi, they won’t be able to use it(unless there’s a way to break into them, which I’m not aware of). It just sits there asking for your password/security code.
- My garmin links with my iphone by bluetooth to turn the GPS into a speaker phone, though it wasn’t great quality, people used to say I sounded like I was in a tunnel. The Magellan isn’t bluetooth capable.
- My garmin lets you choose a variety of voices with a few different accents, most notably British or Australian. The garmin woman is just annoying to listen to, so I had it set to an Australian guy who was very pleasant. This Magellan is one voice, no choices. But so far she isn’t grating on my nerves.
- It didn’t come with a little slip case. In the box there was the actual GPS, manual, window suction cup mount and charger. So now I’ll have to find something to protect it when it’s in my bag.

Magellan RoadMate 6000T 980874-01 3.5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

I have had the Magellan 6000T now for 2 months and I can’t imagine traveling without it. I have traveled for 19 years and made more U-turns than I can shake a stick at.

This system has it all… Blue tooth, spoken street names, easy to navigate touch screen, extremely bright screen (automatically darkens at dusk).

This system gives you more heads up about upcoming turns than any other system on the market. For instance, it will let you of a turn two miles ahead, then one mile, then 0.5 mile. Then it has a 0.2 mile yellow bar graph that shrinks as you come to your turn.

I am very glad I got this system with the spoken street names. It gives you that much more information while you are in unfamiliar territory. The street name voice is a different voice from the turn by turn voice. The street name voice has more of an edge which helps you listen easier to the street name.

It has locked up about 4 times (what high tech electronic gadget never locks up) but it was easy to reboot the system.

One of the best features is the traffic alert. I was in Charlotte, NC which I was unfamiliar with driving during rush hour to the other side of town for a meeting. After I left the hotel, it was directing me turn by turn to the Interstate. While sitting at a red light, I happened to notice it flash “I-85 accident” and then it recalculated the route. I couldn’t believe it when I got to the interstate, it had brought me to the entrance ramp just ahead of where all three lanes were blocked because of the wreck!!!!! I was very impressed!

It also gives you four options for choosing your route which is twice as many as any other system.

I did a lot of research looking at the Garmin systems and Tom Tom. I printed out at least half a ream of paper of specifications and customer comments. The more I looked at Magellan, the more I realized it was the best value. I’m sure Garmins are good and they will work, but the Magellan 6000T matched their highest priced Nuvi systems feature for feature and was significantly cheaper.

It is easily portable and easily attaches and detaches to the mount. In the rental cars, I can easily mount it on the windshield. I have never had a problem with the suction mount.

On my Chrysler 300 company car, I use the flat disk and mount the system on the dashboard with no problems.

I do not regret my purchase at all.

If you travel, you need to seriously look at getting a portable GPS system. I would strongly recommend the Magellan 6000T.

It will be analogous to life before and after a microwave.

Magellan RoadMate 360 2.9-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

My husband bought me this wonderful unit for Christmas and I love it! Since it has all the maps pre-loaded we just plugged it in (with the included cigarette light adaptor), installed it (with the included windshield mount) and in a few mintues we were ready to go. It finds itself in about a minute in heavy tree cover, and in just seconds in open areas. It seems possible that the person who wrote a previous review that his unit regularly took 20 minutes for location could have forgotten to extend the antenna or his unit was defective. Also, the 360 is not meant for handheld operation (hence the name RoadMate) so it needs no internal batteries. After a quick look at the owner’s manual, the Magellan is easy to use. The address autofill function is wonderful – I preloaded my personal addresses at home (with the provided AC adaptor) with ease. The voice directions are clear, the screen bright and large, the maps easy to see. It reminds me of the functional design and usability of the Mactinosh computers. I can’t recommend the 360 more highly.

Magellan MAP 330x 3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

I am very happy with the Magellan MAP 330x GPS. I had purchased it because, for the price, it was better than any of the other brands. It has a good battery life (9-10 hours from 2 AAs depending on how often you use the light feature) , and comes with map software which is a must for this type of GPS.The features it has meet or surpass other products in its class. The only problem I have with it, is that in order to see any local streets you must be zoomed in pretty close, but you can’t expect much more since the screen is only about 3″X2″. I feel that its very accurate… With the map software I can see all of the rural streets around my home.Sometimes it takes a while for the unit to orient its self, but once it has gone through its cycle it stays locked on, even in my basement. I did my homework on this one, and I would recommend it over the other brands, unless they can come up with a better package… Though the others might have products in the same category, they don’t package their GPS with the software and the data cable so they can ding you with the cost of buying it later. … It would be worth your while to do some research before you buy though, so take the time to look around on the above web pages, and visit epinions.com to help you make a sound purchase.
